Sudanese man arrested after threatening to detonate grenades outside Athens police headquarters
On March 6, a Sudanese man was arrested outside the Attica General Police Directorate (GADA) in Athens after threatening to detonate explosives. The incident led to the closure of Alexandras Avenue. Police officers, including members of the DIAS unit, engaged the man in conversation to distract him, allowing others to approach from behind and immobilize him. Sources differ on the number of grenades involved; initial police reports indicated three grenades, while other sources specified two, described as fully functional Czech-made defensive grenades. The suspect claimed he found the grenades in a container at a park near the Acropolis. According to official records, the suspect has been arrested 15 times since 2008 for various offenses, including drug possession and weapons violations, and was released from prison on March 3, 2026. Forensic experts are conducting laboratory tests on the recovered items to confirm their operational status.
