Cypriot foreign minister addresses security incidents involving RAF Akrotiri

Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos confirmed on Friday that two security incidents occurred during the recent regional escalation between Iran, Israel, and the United States. One incident involved a drone strike on the British RAF Akrotiri base, while a second attempted attack was neutralised far from the Republic of Cyprus. Kombos clarified that the drone targeting Akrotiri was aimed at the British facility rather than the Republic itself, emphasizing that Cyprus maintains a humanitarian role and is not involved in military offensives. The government has expressed its concerns and dissatisfaction to the United Kingdom regarding the situation and maintains an active dialogue at all levels. Despite these events, the minister stated that public life, schools, and flights remain largely unaffected and operate normally. The government is coordinating with partners including Greece, France, Italy, and Spain to strengthen regional security. Furthermore, Kombos highlighted the country’s commitment to the 'Estia' plan for the evacuation of foreign nationals from conflict zones.
