EU Council agrees on general approach for the protection of vulnerable adults
On Friday, the Council of the European Union for Justice and Home Affairs in Brussels reached a general approach on a proposed regulation regarding the protection of adults in cross-border situations. Cyprus was represented by the Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Nikolas Ioannidis. The regulation aims to ensure that vulnerable adults, such as those suffering from Alzheimer's disease or age-related health issues, receive consistent support and legal protection when moving between EU member states. Ioannidis highlighted the increasing necessity of this framework due to higher mobility within the EU and an aging population. He cited the example of a woman whose daughter living in another member state seeks to manage her care across borders. This legislative development serves to harmonize legal standards for individuals who may lack the capacity to make decisions for themselves. The move is intended to facilitate administrative and legal continuity for vulnerable citizens throughout the union.
