AKEL opposes President Christodoulides' NATO accession plans

The political party AKEL has criticized President Nikos Christodoulides for his stated intention to pursue Cyprus's accession to NATO. AKEL representatives described this policy as problematic and dangerous, arguing that it lacks democratic legitimacy as it was not part of the President's election platform. The party further noted that during his campaign, Christodoulides argued against NATO involvement in the Cyprus issue. According to AKEL, NATO membership would not address the security threat posed by Turkey, which is already a NATO member. Furthermore, the party warned that such a move could damage diplomatic relations with permanent members of the UN Security Council. AKEL concluded by pledging to oppose any efforts or schemes aimed at integrating Cyprus into the military alliance.
