Diplomatic tension between Hungary and Ukraine over detained citizens and oil transit

Hungarian authorities arrested seven Ukrainian nationals, including a retired security service general and a retired air force officer, on charges of money laundering. The group was intercepted while transporting $40 million, 35 million euros, and nine kilograms of gold from Austria to Ukraine in two vehicles. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, led by Andrii Sybiha, described the detainees as Oschadbank employees and claimed they were taken hostage, demanding their immediate release and access for consular officials. In contrast, the Hungarian government announced plans to deport the seven individuals, citing findings by tax authorities regarding suspicious large-scale cash and gold movements. This incident coincides with a broader dispute over oil supplies, as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban confirmed that his country has stopped diesel exports and may block other vital cargo transits to Ukraine until the flow of Russian crude oil through the Druzhba pipeline is restored. Consequently, the Ukrainian government has issued a travel warning advising its citizens to avoid Hungary due to safety concerns. Tensions remain high as both nations accuse one another of illegal actions and blackmail.
