Consumer behavior in Cyprus amid regional geopolitical tensions
Increased activity has been reported at supermarkets across Cyprus this week as consumers stock up on essential goods due to concerns over regional geopolitical instability. Shoppers are primarily purchasing non-perishable food items, such as pasta and rice, along with baby supplies. Marios Antoniou, general secretary of the Cyprus Retail Trade Association, has dismissed fears of shortages, stating that stores hold at least 30 days of stock. He clarified that any empty shelves are temporary and result from restocking delays rather than a lack of inventory. Additionally, Marios Drousiotis, president of the Consumers Association, urged the public to avoid panic, noting that the current reaction is excessive. While authorities confirm that fuel prices have seen minor increases and may rise further next week, officials maintain that there is no justification for price gouging. Inspectors from the Ministry of Commerce are conducting daily checks to monitor prices and prevent speculative behavior. The authorities emphasize that supply chains remain stable and that the panic is driven primarily by social media reports.
