Gender equality statements on International Women's Day in Cyprus
On March 8, marking International Women's Day, both the Cypriot Commissioner for Gender Equality, Jozie Christodoulou, and the UN-supported Technical Committee on Gender Equality issued statements regarding the role of women in the country. Both entities emphasized that gender equality is a prerequisite for sustainable development, security, and peace in Cyprus. They highlighted the importance of implementing the 'Women, Peace and Security' framework, based on UN Security Council Resolution 1325. The Technical Committee specifically referenced the action plan adopted under Resolution 2587 (2021), which outlines practical measures to boost female representation and civil society engagement. The committee noted that inclusive decision-making processes, involving both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, are essential for institutional strengthening. Christodoulou reaffirmed the Cypriot government's commitment to protecting women's rights despite ongoing geopolitical challenges. The statements collectively stress that full participation of women in public life is vital for building long-term trust and reconciliation on the island.
