European Commission publishes new maritime and ports strategies
The European Commission has released two new policy frameworks: the European Industrial Maritime Strategy and the EU Ports Strategy. The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) has publicly supported these initiatives, noting their objective to bolster the resilience, competitiveness, and sustainability of the European maritime sector. Key focus areas of these strategies include investments in clean fuels, digitalization, and decarbonization technologies across the entire maritime value chain. The EU Ports Strategy specifically aims to enhance the social role of ports, prioritizing safety, security, and digital operational efficiency. According to the CSC, European shipping companies currently control approximately 35 percent of the global fleet. The strategies emphasize the integration of shipyards, shipping companies, and ports to facilitate a green transition. Furthermore, the frameworks highlight the necessity of international regulatory harmonization to achieve global industry decarbonization targets. CSC Director General Iosifidis stated that these investments are essential for the future competitiveness and resilience of the sector.
