British base at Akrotiri remains under partial evacuation following drone strike
British authorities have extended the mandatory evacuation for military families at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus until next Friday, following a drone strike that occurred early Monday. A total of 286 residents have been relocated to hotels at the expense of the bases. While President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed that a Shahed-type drone hit military facilities, causing minor damage, reports regarding the source and targets of the attack differ, with some sources naming Hezbollah and others citing regional tensions linked to the conflict with Iran. Local schools in the Akrotiri district remain closed until Monday. The government of the Republic of Cyprus has implemented a ban on drones and paragliding activities in the area. Protests have occurred in Limassol with residents demanding the closure of British bases, citing security risks and colonial history. The Interior Ministry and base authorities continue to monitor the situation, with further assessments planned for the end of the week.
