Investigation follows discovery of poisoned baits and animal welfare violations in Pano Lefkara
The Game and Fauna Service reported the discovery of poisoned baits and two dead dogs showing signs of poisoning outside a fenced facility in the Pano Lefkara community. During an inspection of the site, which operates as a licensed hare breeding farm, officials found restricted insecticide packaging labeled in Turkish, suspected to have originated from the occupied areas. Further inspections revealed seven live hares kept in wooden cages, a practice that violates the facility's operating license. Additionally, rabbits were found kept in unsuitable conditions nearby, posing a significant risk of disease transmission to the hares and the local wild population. The facility operator has been reported to the authorities for multiple offenses. Plans are currently underway to suspend the breeding farm's operating license.
