Stelios Philanthropic Foundation announces €10 million healthcare initiative for Greek islands
The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, led by entrepreneur Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, has launched a €10 million initiative aimed at supporting medical staff on small Greek islands. The seven-year program is designed to provide financial incentives to attract and retain 80 doctors in 47 regional clinics and multi-purpose regional clinics. The agreement was formalized during a ceremony at the office of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the presence of Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis. This initiative exclusively targets the smallest healthcare facilities in the Greek National Health System, excluding islands that already host larger health centers. Prime Minister Mitsotakis stated that this is a unique contribution, as it focuses on human resources rather than physical infrastructure. The program aims to ensure consistent, year-round medical coverage for residents on remote islands, addressing long-standing staffing challenges. Both the foundation and the government emphasized the goal of creating a stable working environment for medical professionals over the seven-year period.
