Authorities continue status checks on Cyprus shelter network

As of March 6, 2026, Cypriot authorities are conducting comprehensive inspections of civil defense shelters nationwide. Ministry of Interior spokesperson Margarita Kyriakou stated that approximately 90 officials from the Civil Defense, the Game and Fauna Service, and district administrations are verifying the availability and condition of these spaces. Property owners have been instructed to clear their designated shelter areas. Facilities that have been repurposed for other uses will be removed from the official 'Safe Cy' application. Meanwhile, Civil Defense Commander Maria Pappa addressed concerns regarding infrastructure limitations and recent technical issues with warning SMS tests. Officials acknowledged challenges in rural and semi-urban areas and are currently working with local community leaders to identify additional underground spaces for potential use, such as the three locations recently identified in Akkiou. Authorities clarified that these shelters are designed for short-term stays, not long-term occupancy, and urged citizens to review alternative protection guidelines provided by the Civil Defense.
