British pilot achieves first F-35 combat intercept
On Monday night, a British Royal Air Force pilot flying an F-35 Lightning II intercepted two Shahed drones over Jordan. Operating out of the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus, the pilot was part of a four-hour mission alongside two Eurofighter Typhoon jets. The pilot, whose name remains undisclosed, utilized two ASRAAM missiles to neutralize the targets, marking the first time a British F-35 has engaged in an air-to-air combat kill. The mission was described as high-risk, with the pilot emphasizing the necessity of precise target identification to avoid striking friendly US or Israeli aircraft in the area. Following the engagement, the pilot focused on situational awareness rather than celebration, returning to operational duties immediately. The pilot's base, RAF Akrotiri, was reportedly targeted by a separate drone strike on the preceding Sunday evening. Authorities are currently investigating the origin of the drone that targeted the base.
