Regional meeting on civil defense shelters held in Paphos

A provincial meeting was held on Friday at the Palia Ilektriki venue in Paphos to coordinate civil protection measures and evaluate existing shelter infrastructure. Chaired by Charalambos Pittokopitis, President of the Paphos District Self-Government Organization, the session included officials from the police, fire service, civil defense, and local municipalities. Current data indicates there are 81 established shelters in the Paphos district, though officials acknowledge that deficiencies exist and require immediate state intervention. The Civil Defense briefed stakeholders on the current regional situation and emphasized the need for standardized safety protocols for both personnel and the public. Separate discussions recently occurred in the Yeroskipou municipality, where only seven shelters were identified, highlighting a gap in coverage across four municipal departments. Proposals to designate new facilities, such as the Christoforos Chatzilampris Health Center in Koloni, are under review as part of a wider effort to expand capacity. The Civil Defense has been actively searching for additional shelter locations for the past two years, utilizing assistance from the Land Registry and the Game and Fauna Service to assess and upgrade existing sites.
