Public consultation held regarding the transformation of the Limassol Zoo
On March 4, 2026, a public consultation took place at the Panos Solomonidis Cultural Centre in Limassol to discuss the future of the local zoo. The event was organized by the Municipality of Limassol and the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CYCERE). Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeutis and Bishop Nikolaos of Amathous participated, emphasizing the need for a modern environmental education space. Dr. Andreas Hadjichambis, Scientific Director of CYCERE, presented a study proposing the site's transformation into the 'Limassol Biodiversity and Urban Environment Centre – NATURE'. The project intends to feature educational programs, sustainability workshops, and urban biodiversity initiatives. Officials also shared findings from a February electronic public consultation involving approximately 500 citizens. According to the data presented, 81% of participants support closing the existing zoo and establishing the new environmental center.
