Veterinary services are managing an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease following a confirmed case in a cattle unit in Dromolaxia. The Green Party has raised concerns over burial procedures, citing photographic evidence of carcasses submerged in water within burial trenches. Allegations suggest inadequate sealing of the pits, posing a risk of groundwater contamination, and the transport of infected carcasses in open trucks, which could facilitate further disease spread. Farmers also report strong odors affecting the surrounding area. Veterinary spokesperson Sotiria Georgiadou responded by expressing disapproval of the public dissemination of these images, emphasizing the need to respect affected farmers. Meanwhile, the government has approved a compensation package of up to 50,000 euros per unit for affected livestock owners. Authorities maintain that they are following safety protocols to ensure environmental containment and have implemented a movement ban with fines up to 5,000 euros.
