Cyprus parliament bans age-based discrimination in vehicle insurance

On March 5, 2026, the Parliament of Cyprus passed legislation prohibiting age-based discrimination in vehicle insurance policies. The proposal, introduced by Volt MP Alexandra Attalidou, was approved with a vote of 49 in favor and one against. The new law prevents insurance companies from refusing coverage, declining renewals, or imposing disproportionate premium increases based solely on a driver's age. Insurers are now required to provide written and documented justifications for any premium increases or refusals of service. Additionally, the legislation establishes mechanisms for state oversight and the formal examination of consumer complaints regarding insurance practices. This measure aims to address institutional gaps and ensure equal access to mandatory vehicle insurance services for all citizens regardless of their age group.
