Union requests remote work for staff at British bases in Cyprus amid regional tensions
The Pasydy union branch representing civil administration employees at British bases in Cyprus has formally requested that management implement remote working for all staff whose duties can be performed off-site. In a letter sent to Deputy Command Secretary Stephen Dougan on Thursday, the union cited the escalating military conflict in the region as an immediate security risk to employees. The union highlighted a discrepancy in safety measures, noting that while personnel at RAF Akrotiri were instructed to evacuate with only essential staff remaining, no such guidance has been issued for the bases in Episkopi, Dhekelia, and Ayios Nikolaos. Staff at these locations expressed uncertainty and concern regarding their physical safety. Union General Secretary Stratis Matthaiou emphasized that protecting the lives of workers must be the top priority for the Sovereign Base Areas Administration. The union argues that requiring physical presence under current conditions exposes employees to unnecessary danger. Consequently, they are urging the administration to finalize remote work protocols without further delay.
