Parliamentary Health Committee addresses university clinics legislation

The parliamentary Health Committee is currently reviewing a bill regarding the establishment and operation of university clinics. This legislative effort began in November, but discussions have been stalled by ongoing disagreements between involved stakeholders. Public hospital doctors have expressed major concerns regarding workplace hierarchy and the potential for creating a two-tier system of medical professionals. The committee is exploring various logistical solutions, including a proposal to construct two additional floors at the Nicosia General Hospital to physically separate academic and hospital medical staff. Medical students from the University of Cyprus have scheduled a protest in response to the slow progress of the legislation. To resolve these impasses, a technical committee is being formed immediately to reconcile conflicting positions. The goal of this committee is to finalize the bill so that it can proceed to a plenary vote. Political parties have yet to adopt a unified stance on the matter.
