Cyprus launches nationwide vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease
Cypriot veterinary authorities have launched a nationwide vaccination campaign against foot-and-mouth disease, targeting approximately 85,000 cattle and 470,000 sheep and goats. The effort follows the detection of outbreaks in the Larnaca district, specifically in areas including Livadia, Dromolaxia, Aradippou, Troulloi, and Oroklini. As of early March 2026, nine new cases were identified, and over 7,000 animals have been culled since the start of the outbreak in accordance with EU regulations. Officials are investigating an illegal holding facility in Livadia where infected cattle were discovered, noting potential criminal implications. Vaccines for pigs have been ordered from Germany, while vaccination efforts remain prioritized for herds located near pig farms. Authorities have established 3-kilometer protection zones and 10-kilometer surveillance zones to contain the virus. Local farmers have requested further EU oversight regarding the use of disease control funds in occupied areas during an upcoming meeting with the President of the Republic.
