Greek actors experience emergency flight diversion due to Middle East tensions
Greek actors Smaragda Karydi and Giorgos Kapoutzidis were diverted while traveling from Sri Lanka to Athens with a connection in Doha. On Saturday, approximately 50 minutes before reaching Doha, the flight changed course due to regional instability in the Middle East. The aircraft was forced to perform a U-turn and circled the airport in Muscat, Oman, for about one hour before landing. Passengers remained on the aircraft for a total of seven hours during the ordeal. While reports differ on whether the actors were briefly stuck in Sri Lanka or only delayed mid-flight, Karydi confirmed that the detour was necessitated by airspace safety concerns. The actors eventually returned to Greece safely after the flight situation was resolved. The incident occurred amidst widespread flight cancellations and airspace closures in the region following military escalations involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
