Cyprus authorities evaluate shelter readiness and extend Akrotiri evacuation

Cyprus Civil Defence spokesperson Panayiotis Liasidis announced that authorities are conducting nationwide inspections of bomb shelters to ensure their readiness. Citizens are encouraged to locate their nearest shelter via the SafeCY mobile application or by calling the Civil Defence Operations Control Centre at +357 22 403 451 or +357 22 403 452. The Interior Ministry confirmed that the evacuation order for the Akrotiri municipal district remains in effect until Friday, 6 March, pending further review. Approximately 250 residents from the area are currently being housed with assistance from the Cyprus Red Cross. Schools in Akrotiri will also remain closed until the evacuation status is reassessed. Authorities advise residents to prepare emergency kits, including food, water, medical supplies, and essential documents. Additionally, Liasidis clarified that recent emergency alerts were sent as bulk SMS messages, which served as a temporary test of communication systems.
