UK reinforces military presence in Cyprus amid regional tensions
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the UK is strengthening its military bases in Cyprus in response to ongoing regional instability. Two AW159 Wildcat helicopters with anti-drone capabilities are being deployed to the island, with arrivals scheduled for late this week. Additionally, the HMS Dragon Type 45 destroyer is expected to depart from Portsmouth for Cyprus next week. UK Defence Minister John Healey held discussions with his Cypriot counterpart, Vasilis Palmas, in Nicosia on Thursday to coordinate on air defense and regional security. While reports surfaced regarding an alleged drone strike on the Akrotiri air base, official sources focused on the broader reinforcement of defensive assets. Starmer maintained that British installations in Cyprus have not been used for offensive operations against Iran. Both nations expressed a commitment to crisis management and civilian safety. The UK government stated that defensive assets, including fighter jets and air defense systems, have been repositioned to the region since January.
