Diplomatic coordination follows drone attack on RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus

Cyprus High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Kyriacos Kouros, stated that Cyprus is in constant diplomatic communication with the UK following a drone attack on the RAF Akrotiri base that occurred on Saturday night. President Nikos Christodoulides has held multiple phone calls with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, alongside continuous discussions between foreign ministries and national security advisors. Commissioner Kouros emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus does not wish to be drawn into the regional conflict, noting that the island serves as a humanitarian hub. The British government has committed to sending the HMS Dragon, though its arrival is expected in approximately one week. Reports also indicate that Wildcat helicopters are currently en route to the region and that UK Defence Secretary John Healey may visit the island. Kouros highlighted that the safety of thousands of Cypriot residents living near the bases and the British expat community, comprising five per cent of the island's population, remains a primary concern. He noted that while the UK's engagement is necessary, the Republic of Cyprus maintains its desire to remain detached from the escalating hostilities.
