Concerns raised over the readiness of civil defense shelters in Cyprus

Concerns regarding the adequacy of civilian shelters in Cyprus have emerged following the conflict in the Middle East and a reported drone attack on the Akrotiri British Base. Reports indicate that there are approximately 2,500 shelters intended to house 45% of the island's population. However, an investigation by Philenews using the "SafeCY" application found significant discrepancies in the available infrastructure. Many designated shelters are currently functioning as private parking garages or commercial storage spaces. Investigators noted that some locations listed in the official app were either nonexistent or lacked proper signage. In several instances, the condition of the facilities was described as poor, with reports of accumulated waste and debris. While Minister of the Interior Konstantinos Ioannou and Director of Civil Defence Maria have addressed the public regarding these concerns, the current state of the infrastructure remains a subject of debate. The investigation concludes that while some shelters meet basic safety standards, many others are currently unsuitable for civilian use.
