Security alerts and siren activations at Akrotiri British bases

Between March 4 and March 6, 2026, residents near the Akrotiri British bases in Cyprus experienced multiple security alerts and siren activations. On the night of March 4 and throughout March 5, officials reported several instances where sirens sounded and residents received mobile alerts instructing them to seek cover indoors and stay away from windows. Kouri Mayor Pantelis Georgiou confirmed that these alerts were issued by the British bases citing potential security threats. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis later clarified that no actual threats were identified, describing the activations as precautionary measures. Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris explained that such siren tests may occur regularly while the conflict in the Middle East persists. Although some residents expressed concern and a need for psychological support, authorities stated that the situation is being monitored and most individuals have returned to their daily routines. No combat aircraft were deployed, and most alerts lasted only a few minutes before being lifted.
