Escalation of conflict between Israel, Iran, and Lebanon
Military hostilities involving Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah have intensified significantly since late February 2026. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have conducted 2,500 airstrikes against Iran, claiming to have destroyed 80% of its air defense systems and 60% of its ballistic missile launchers. In response, Iran has targeted energy facilities and military bases in Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, leading to condemnations from the EU and Gulf Cooperation Council. Simultaneously, Israel has launched a widespread air campaign in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, resulting in conflicting casualty reports ranging from 77 to 217 deaths and at least 800 injuries. Over 300,000 people have been displaced within Lebanon, with UN officials describing the scale of displacement and panic as unprecedented. Hezbollah has ordered residents within five kilometers of the border to evacuate in retaliation. Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has formally outlawed Hezbollah and declared a military confrontation against the group.
