Cyprus emergency SMS test reveals system inconsistencies

On Wednesday, the Cypriot government conducted a test of its new mass emergency SMS alert system, aimed at providing timely public information. The initiative, led by the Deputy Ministry of Innovation in coordination with mobile providers, faced significant technical challenges. Many residents reported delayed messages, receiving them in the wrong language, or not receiving them at all. Officials acknowledged these discrepancies, citing varying delivery speeds among telecommunications providers and promising a full review of the system. Civil Defence Commander Maria Papa stated that the system is expected to be fully functional by early June. While the ministry claimed initial success, public feedback on social media highlighted widespread failures and confusion regarding the test's purpose. The government has faced criticism for the delay in implementing such a system, particularly after the July 2025 Limassol fires. Authorities stated that two additional planned test messages were cancelled as the ministry seeks to resolve the identified technical issues.
