Ministry of Interior evaluates text message warning system after test delays
On March 4, 2026, the Cypriot Ministry of Interior conducted a trial run of a new SMS-based early warning system for public safety. The tests aimed to evaluate the speed and efficiency of notifying the public in emergency situations. Reports following the trial indicated that while many subscribers received the messages, a significant number experienced delays or did not receive the test messages at all. Authorities identified that the latency varied significantly between different telecommunications providers. The Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy is currently consulting with these providers to address technical bottlenecks and optimize delivery times. The Ministry of Interior stated that the system will be re-evaluated as a result of these findings. Meanwhile, existing public information protocols remain in effect. The full implementation of the broader Early Warning System is scheduled for June 2026.
