UK deploys HMS Dragon to Cyprus amid rising Middle East tensions
The United Kingdom is deploying the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon to Cyprus to bolster security following a drone attack on the RAF Akrotiri base. While officials initially indicated a departure within days, the vessel is now expected to set sail next week from Portsmouth due to ongoing maintenance and ammunition loading. British defense officials, including Al Carns and John Healey, dismissed claims that financial constraints or reduced shipyard operating hours caused the delay, emphasizing that the ship was being refitted from a different assignment. To provide immediate support, the UK is dispatching Wildcat helicopters armed with Martlet missiles. Currently, the UK has reinforced its military presence in Cyprus with increased air defense specialists and fighter jets. Government officials maintain that these measures are intended to protect British personnel, the base, and regional allies. Defense Minister John Healey declined to rule out potential UK involvement in future operations against Iran, citing the evolving nature of the conflict.
