Cyprus government launches new national emergency alert system
The government of the Republic of Cyprus, in collaboration with local telecommunication providers, has launched a new emergency alert system designed to inform citizens about safety incidents. On Wednesday, March 4, at 19:00, the authorities conducted a nationwide test of this service by sending a notification to all mobile phone users in the country. Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou stated that the system is being implemented as a preventive measure in light of the ongoing regional instability. The test message was intended to verify infrastructure readiness and ensure citizens remain informed of safety protocols. Official guidance provided for potential future emergencies instructs citizens to seek shelter in basements or remain indoors away from doors, windows, and glass if no basement is available. Those in outdoor areas are advised to move to the nearest indoor facility, while schools, hospitals, and stadiums will follow specific established protocols. Citizens are urged to avoid using vehicles during such events until further official instructions are issued.
