Cyprus civil defense inspects shelters amid Akrotiri evacuation
As of March 4, 2026, the Cyprus Civil Defense is conducting a comprehensive inspection of approximately 2,500 shelters, expected to be completed within 2 to 3 days. Spokesperson Panagiotis Liasidis confirmed that while most shelters are privately owned and previously required 24 to 48 hours for activation, crews are now actively repairing units that were converted into storage spaces by owners. Citizens are advised to locate their nearest shelter via the SafeCY app or by contacting the Civil Defense operations center at +357 22 403 451 or +357 22 403 452. Residents are encouraged to prepare an emergency backpack containing essential items such as water, non-perishable food, medicine, and documents. Meanwhile, the village of Akrotiri remains under an evacuation order until at least Friday, March 6, pending further situation assessment. Currently, about 110 displaced residents are being housed in hotels and a monastery, while the majority of the 1,100 inhabitants are staying with relatives. Officials urge the public to remain calm and follow instructions from authorities in the event of an alarm.
