Cardiovascular diseases and cancer remain top causes of death in northern Cyprus

According to data from the statistical institute in northern Cyprus, cardiovascular diseases and cancer are the primary threats to public health. Statistics for the year 2024 show that out of 1,745 recorded deaths, 891 or 46.4% were attributed to diseases of the circulatory system. Over the period of 2019-2024, a total of 9,767 deaths were recorded, with 4,598 caused by heart-related issues. Cancer accounts for approximately 12.9% of total deaths, followed by respiratory system diseases. There is also a notable 10.6% increase in deaths from external causes, such as road accidents. The report by Yeni Bakis emphasizes the long-term nature of these health trends. The figures highlight that nearly one in every two deaths in the region is linked to cardiac problems. Public health officials remain concerned about the rising impact of both chronic illnesses and external factors on mortality rates.
