EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra discusses Cyprus's role in climate resilience and energy
European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra emphasized Cyprus's critical position in addressing the climate crisis during an interview in Nicosia. He stated that climate action is directly linked to economic growth, innovation, and European industrial competitiveness. The Commissioner noted that Cyprus is currently facing significant environmental challenges, specifically forest fires and water shortages. Consequently, the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU will prioritize climate resilience and water management. Hoekstra acknowledged that the European Union as a whole remains insufficiently prepared for climate-related disasters. To overcome energy isolation, Cyprus is encouraged to utilize its high solar potential and improve energy efficiency. The Great Sea Interconnector project is identified as a strategic priority for integrating renewable sources and ensuring energy security. Regional cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean is also proposed to diversify risks and support the transition to clean energy.
