Nicolas Papadopoulos faces leadership pressure as DIKO polls decline ahead of elections
Nicolas Papadopoulos, leader of the Democratic Party (DIKO), recently announced he would take full responsibility for the party's upcoming election results and let members decide his future leadership. During his 12-year presidency, the party's electoral share has declined from 15.76% in 2011 to 11.29% in 2021, though it maintained its parliamentary seats. Current polls suggest DIKO may drop to 9%, potentially losing its traditional role as a political regulator to new forces like Fidias Panayiotou's Amessi Dimokratia. The party faces challenges in attracting younger voters who often associate it with established power structures and clientelism. Additionally, political shifts follow the 2021 election of Annita Demetriou as House Speaker, which resulted from a failed AKEL-DIKO alliance and tactical maneuvers by other parties. Current political discussions are already focusing on the next House Speaker election as a strategic step toward the 2028 presidential elections. Meanwhile, Parliament is considering changes to the procedures for electing its President to avoid past complications.
