Cyprus Finance Minister Makis Keravnos to chair ECOFIN and attend Eurogroup in Brussels
Cypriot Finance Minister Makis Keravnos is traveling to Brussels to participate in the Eurogroup meeting on Monday, February 16, and chair the ECOFIN Council on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. During the Eurogroup session, ministers from all 27 member states will discuss economic policy recommendations for the eurozone originally issued by the European Commission in December. The ministers will also exchange views on future actions to strengthen the international role of the euro as part of the European Union's strategy for increased autonomy. An expanded session of the Eurogroup will focus on international macroeconomic imbalances and current geopolitical risks, featuring the participation of Canada's Finance Minister. On Tuesday, Keravnos will preside over the ECOFIN Council, starting with a working breakfast to discuss recent economic developments. The main agenda for ECOFIN includes the presentation of European Commission proposals designed to enhance the framework for supplementary pensions. The Council is also expected to formally approve the eurozone economic recommendations discussed the previous day. ECOFIN remains responsible for EU economic policy, taxation, financial service regulation, and budget management.
