United States and Iran to resume indirect nuclear negotiations in Geneva
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi departed Tehran for Geneva to lead a diplomatic delegation in a second round of indirect nuclear negotiations with the United States scheduled for Tuesday. The talks are being mediated by the Sultanate of Oman and supported by Swiss authorities. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi stated that Tehran is open to compromise on its nuclear program provided that Washington discusses lifting economic sanctions. Conversely, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described a potential deal as difficult to achieve, while President Donald Trump has expressed a preference for an agreement despite maintaining military pressure. Iran specifically seeks economic benefits in sectors like energy, mining, and aviation, but emphasizes that its missile program remains non-negotiable. During the visit, Araghchi is also expected to meet with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Omani Foreign Minister. While Tehran claims the process is moving in a positive direction, U.S. officials have expressed skepticism regarding Iran's commitment to the negotiation process.
