UK to deploy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales to the Arctic later this year
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference that the United Kingdom will deploy the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales and its carrier strike group to the North Atlantic and Arctic regions within the year. The £3 billion flagship will operate alongside naval forces from the United States, Canada, and other NATO allies as part of a commitment to Euro-Atlantic security. The British strike group will include the carrier, 40 aircraft, a frigate, a destroyer, a submarine, and a supply ship. Starmer stated that Europe must take primary responsibility for its own defense and be prepared to utilize "hard power" to deter potential aggression. He referenced NATO warnings that Russia could be ready to use military force against the alliance by the end of the decade. The Prime Minister also accused Moscow of utilizing hybrid threats, such as cyberattacks and disinformation, to disrupt European stability and social contracts. He concluded by characterizing the conflict in Ukraine as a strategic error for Russia, citing casualty figures exceeding one million.
