On a Saturday in Munich, the governments of the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands presented findings from a joint investigation involving France regarding the death of Alexei Navalny. They alleged the 47-year-old Russian opposition leader was poisoned with epibatidine, a neurotoxin derived from the Ecuadorian poison dart frog. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the substance is 200 times more potent than morphine and is classified as a chemical weapon. The joint report suggests that only the Russian government had the necessary means and motive to deploy such a toxin within a prison environment. The announcement was made during a press conference attended by the deceased's wife, Yulia Navalnaya. Western officials characterized the use of this toxin, traditionally used by indigenous tribes for hunting, as evidence of state involvement. The investigation claims the Kremlin used this specific method to silence the dissident's voice while in custody.
