Interior Ministry investigates Turkish Cypriot property management in Paphos
The Interior Ministry of Cyprus, through Director General Ellikos Elia, confirmed an ongoing investigation into the management of Turkish Cypriot properties in Paphos. The probe specifically examines contracts between the Paphos Municipality and private individuals, including a case in the Mouttalos area. According to reports, a property was illegally subleased for use as a café-restaurant despite explicit prohibitions from the Legal Service. This specific business reportedly operated without necessary planning or other required permits. The investigation follows a complaint filed with the Paphos Criminal Investigation Department in April 2022. An investigative file was submitted to the Attorney General on January 13, 2026, to determine if further legal action is required against the suspended mayor and others. Director General Elia stated that the ministry is also conducting broader sample checks across Cyprus to ensure compliance with property regulations. These efforts aim to rationalize the management of Turkish Cypriot properties, building on previous reforms in areas like Mackenzie. A ministry team is scheduled to conduct on-site inspections in Paphos during the coming week.
