Klirou and Pomos dams overflow despite low overall water storage in Cyprus

Following heavy rainfall, the Klirou and Pomos dams in Cyprus reached full capacity and began overflowing in the early hours of Saturday, February 14, 2026. The Klirou dam, located on the Serrachis river with a capacity of nearly 2 million cubic meters, provides water to several communities and military camps. The Pomos dam, with a capacity of approximately 860,000 cubic meters, is vital for local agriculture and irrigation. Despite these localized overflows, the Water Development Department reported that the total water storage across Cyprus remains low at 14.1% as of February 13. This is a significant decrease compared to the 26% recorded during the same period last year. Specifically, the Kouris dam stands at 12.6% capacity, while Asprokremmos is at 12.9%. Other major dams, such as Evretou and Kalavasos, also show low levels at 18.5% and 7.9% respectively.
