Stories of long-term marriages and historical endurance in Cyprus
Recent reports highlight the lives of two couples in Cyprus who have maintained long-term relationships spanning several decades. Thekla and Stelios Argyrou, both 82 years old, have shared a common path for 61 years after growing up as classmates in the village of Kyperounta. Stelios moved to Nicosia for work after school, but the couple reunited despite the distance. In a separate account featured on Sigma TV, Andreas and Elli Kleovoulou discussed their 53-year relationship. Andreas recalls their early days when he worked on streetlights, while Elli notes the challenges of communication during his military service. A significant period of difficulty occurred during the 1974 Turkish invasion when Andreas was stationed as a soldier in Larnaca near Pyrogi and Louroutzina. For nearly 20 days during the conflict, the couple could not communicate directly, relying on neighbors' telephones or messages from friends. Today, both couples emphasize the importance of daily choice and mutual support in sustaining their long marriages.
