Cyclone Gezani causes fatalities and extensive damage in Madagascar

Tropical Cyclone Gezani struck Madagascar in February 2026, resulting in a death toll estimated between 31 and 40 people. Among the victims were 12 individuals who reportedly drowned inside a shipping container. The storm hit the second-largest city, Toamaína, with wind gusts reaching 250 km/h, leading President Michella Randrianirina to state that approximately 75% of the city was leveled. Official reports indicate that 36 people were seriously injured and four remains missing following the event. Currently, Toamaína is operating with only 5% of its electricity supply, and water services have been completely severed. The World Food Programme (WFP) confirmed that one of its primary warehouses was destroyed, complicating aid distribution. According to the National Risk and Disaster Management Office (BNGRC), over 6,870 people have been displaced and a total of 250,406 residents are considered victims of the disaster. Rescue efforts are severely hindered by destroyed bridges and roads blocked by debris and uprooted trees.
