Cyprus reports high food waste rates as government strengthens environmental strategies

Cyprus currently records one of the highest food waste rates per capita within the European Union, leading to significant environmental and social consequences. Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou addressed these issues during the mindREsetters of the Year competition award ceremony on Friday. She stated that the state has acknowledged the problem and is implementing policies to reduce waste and improve resource management. Central to these efforts is the National Action Plan for a Circular Economy, which promotes sustainable practices. Theodosiou highlighted that changing daily habits is essential, noting that student projects demonstrate practical solutions for waste reduction. Education is considered a decisive factor in making the circular economy model functional. Additionally, Cyprus is updating its national strategy on climate change to focus on resilience against rising temperatures and decreased rainfall. The commissioner emphasized that the younger generation is actively planning solutions rather than waiting for them. She concluded that the government aims to support these student initiatives beyond the scope of educational programs.
