Median age in Cyprus rises to 41, marking one of the highest increases in the EU
According to Eurostat data, the median age in Cyprus reached 41 years as of January 2025, reflecting a four-year increase since 2015. This growth rate is the highest in the European Union, shared with Slovakia. In 2015, the median age in Cyprus was 37 years. Currently, approximately 18.3% of the Cypriot population is over 65, compared to 14.5% a decade ago, while the proportion of children under 14 has decreased to 15.2%. Across the EU, the average median age rose by 2.1 years to 44.9 years, with Ireland recording the lowest age (39.6) and Italy the highest (49.1). Germany and Malta were the only member states to see a slight decrease in median age by 0.4 years. Additionally, Eurostat noted that the EU-born population's median age is 45.2, which is 2.1 years higher than that of foreign-born residents. Significant aging trends were also observed in Italy, Greece, Poland, and Portugal.
