Cyta seeks legislative amendment to enter Cyprus renewable energy market
The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) is advocating for the modernization of its institutional framework to allow its entry into the renewable energy sector. A proposed bill is currently under review by the Parliamentary Finance Committee, with a decision expected before the upcoming dissolution of Parliament. Cyta argues that its current legislation is decades old, while competitors and other public entities like the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) already operate in multiple sectors. The organization's strategy focuses on providing green energy to consumers without access to private photovoltaic systems, such as tenants and apartment residents. Cyta plans to sign agreements with third-party producers and eventually explore self-production and energy storage. Additionally, the move would allow Cyta to offer bundled telecommunications and energy packages to maintain competitiveness against private providers. While Cyta claims this will benefit the economy, the EAC has reportedly lobbied against the bill. Members of the committee have raised concerns regarding the potential impact on competition between the two state-owned organizations.
