Kathryn Ruemmler to resign as Goldman Sachs general counsel over Epstein ties
Kathryn Ruemmler, the general counsel for Goldman Sachs and former White House counsel under Barack Obama, will step down from her position effective June 30. Her resignation follows the release of Department of Justice documents revealing extensive communications with Jeffrey Epstein between 2014 and 2019. The documents include emails where Ruemmler refers to Epstein as "Uncle Jeffrey" and discusses gifts such as a bag and a watch. While Ruemmler stated her relationship with Epstein was professional and related to her work as a defense attorney, the records indicate she advised him on public image management and his 2018 plea deal. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon accepted her resignation, noting her desire to protect the firm from media scrutiny. Ruemmler had been with Goldman Sachs since 2020 and served as its top lawyer since 2021. Law enforcement notes also revealed that Epstein contacted her the night of his 2019 arrest and named her as a backup executor in a version of his will.
