Cyprus cabinet discusses housing expansion, constitutional changes, and refugee voting rights
On Friday, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced three main agenda items for the Cabinet meeting. The first involves expanding state housing schemes to provide financial assistance to more citizens, following previous investments cited between €300 million and €400 million. The government is also awaiting GDP growth results for the fourth quarter of 2025 to inform future social spending. A second major item is a proposed constitutional amendment based on recommendations from the FBI to strengthen law enforcement's ability to combat crime. Additionally, the Cabinet is reviewing a measure to grant voting rights to displaced persons of maternal descent for local government elections. This change allows them to vote based on their place of displacement, aligning their rights with those of paternal descent refugees. These decisions are part of the government's stated priorities for 2026.
