Eurobarometer survey reveals EU citizens' concerns and expectations regarding defense and security
A new Eurobarometer survey conducted between January 5 and 12, 2026, highlights significant security concerns among European citizens. According to the findings, 52% of Europeans trust the European Union's ability to enhance the continent's security and defense. In Cyprus, this trust is notably higher, reaching 73%, marking one of the highest rates in the EU. On a broader scale, 68% of EU respondents believe their country's security is currently threatened, while 76% of Cypriots share this view. Regarding personal safety, 42% of Europeans feel at risk compared to 52% of those surveyed in Cyprus. The report also establishes a direct link between European space policy and the strengthening of regional security. Overall, defense and security have emerged as primary priorities for citizens across the member states. Cyprus stands out as a country that actively supports an increased role for the EU in these sectors.
