Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar alleges "honey trap" by Orban government
Peter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party and the primary challenger to Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Hungary's upcoming April elections, has accused the government of orchestrating a sexual blackmail plot. On February 12, images and video teasers of a bedroom where Magyar met with his former partner, Evelin Vogel, began circulating online. Magyar claimed the encounter in August 2024 was a "honey trap" organized by intelligence services to sabotage his leading position in the polls. Although the leaked photographs showed a white powder suspected to be drugs on a nightstand, Magyar denied using any illegal substances and offered to undergo testing. He characterized the operation as a "classic Russian blackmail tactic" designed to derail his campaign. The Tisza party currently leads Orban's Fidesz party as the election approaches. Magyar maintained that his actions were legal and consensual, describing the leak as part of an increasingly dirty political campaign involving personal attacks and deepfakes.
